7 Signs of Gutter Damage on Your Home

damaged rain gutter

If you are like most homeowners, your rain gutters are not something you really think about. They need routine gutter cleaning, but otherwise, their functionality is very simple.

It’s not until gutters aren’t doing what they’re supposed to that you understand how important they are for your home!

WHAT DO GUTTERS DO?

Gutters and downspouts go unnoticed on most houses in Euclid. They fade into the home’s exterior unless the homeowner decided on copper or wood … materials that are definitely meant to stand out! Most home exteriors are made of durable yet lightweight aluminum or vinyl siding.

The point of rain gutters is to provide a route of least resistance for rain to get off your roof quickly. When they are in good condition, your gutters will direct runoff away from the home’s foundation and landscaping, will protect your home’s exterior from mildew and mold, the concrete and pavement and basement from leaks, and the rain gutters themselves from rust.

When gutters are damaged, it can cause thousands of dollars’ worth of damage to your home and property.

ARE YOUR GUTTERS DAMAGED?

Gutter damage is too simple to repair to be the reason for any major home repairs! Inspecting your gutters is simple and safe. If you see any of the following issues, it’s a good indication that your rain gutters have some kind of damage.

As soon as you notice a gutter issue, you can decide if it’s something you feel comfortable repairing or remedying on your own or if it’s something you should call a gutter repairman for.

Sitting Water Near Your Home

Sitting water is a sure sign that your gutters or downspouts are not directing the rain runoff away from your home the way they should be. Pooling water can lead to mold, weakening of your foundation, and provides the perfect habitat for mosquitoes. Plus, it will make the areas around your house perpetually soggy and muddy.

Mold or Mildew

Either one of these is a bad sign, whether you see mold or mildew on the rain gutters or the sides of your home. Mold and mildew mean there is excessive moisture around that area – a possible problem with the gutters could be the cause. Keep in mind that mold and mildew are likely to grow on the north side of a home anyway, so if that’s where these substances are growing, it might just be because that area gets very little direct sunlight. This is a time when the advice and expertise of a gutter specialist in Euclid would be helpful.

Rain Pouring Over the Gutter

You will have to wait until it’s actually raining to notice this gutter problem. Hopefully this doesn’t mean that you have gutter damage. It could just be that the gutter is clogged with debris and needs to be cleaned. In either case, you want to have it checked right away.

Basement Leaks

Depending on the design of your home’s basement, your leak might be due to any number of things. The pooling issue we discussed before could definitely lead to a basement leak. Egress windows and cinder block walls can only keep out so much water. That’s why it is important to keep your gutters in good shape!

Landscaping or Lawn Damage

Gutters empty directly onto the ground in most cases, and landscaping should be laid out to work with this water flow to help it submerge into the ground. However, a leaking gutter or clogged gutter will cause rainfall to overflow or pool in areas where it shouldn’t. This water can kill plants by force or by overwatering. It will also displace flower bed materials like rock or mulch.

Water Marks

Water marks are the first sign that there is too much moisture on a surface. Water marks are sometimes left behind even if standing water has evaporated or dissipated into the ground. You usually find water marks under the gutters or behind the downspouts. This is a usually an indication that rain water is streaming down the outside of the gutters rather than staying inside of them.

Visible Gutter Damage

The final sign of gutter damage is the simplest to find. If your gutters are bent, sagging or cracked in the middle, they obviously have damage. Following a storm, it’s a good idea to walk around your house to assess any damage to the roof, outer walls, and rain gutters. These inspections are in addition to any standard home inspections.

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR GUTTERS?

Here are a couple of simple ways Euclid Gutters & Exteriors recommends to help prevent gutter damage:

Clean your gutters at least once a year. You can lengthen the amount of time between gutter repairs by having them cleaned out. Like with anything else, the better you maintain your gutters, the fewer issues you’ll experience with them.

The best time to clean gutters is in the spring, but to be cautious, give them a cleaning in the fall, too. Many homeowners clean their gutters themselves, but there are many local gutter cleaning companies that offer this service so you don’t have to handle the work or the risk.

Inspect your gutters often. Signs of gutter damage can be visible from the outside of the gutters. A fast inspection – with both feet firmly on the ground – will reveal any of the signs we discussed above.

We’d suggest that you complete an exterior home inspection following each season to ensure that your gutters are functioning correctly.

When you see signs of gutter damage, act fast. Taking care of a problem before it becomes too bad can save you time and money. A small crack, for example, can be sealed, or the section of gutter with the crack can easily be replaced very affordably and quickly.

But, if you let the issue go on for too long, you might end up needing repairs in your basement, replacing expensive vinyl siding or redoing an entire area of landscaping.
